George Thagard doesn't need to go to amusement parks to ride a steam train. Just a few steps to the front of his house can take him aboard Deanna, his full-size, narrow-gauge steam locomotive.
Deanna is a 1981 fully restored, steam-powered locomotive built in May 1891 by Baldwin Locomotives in Pennsylvania for the Kaiwiki Sugar Co. in Ookala, Hawaii.
"I like machines … and old steam engines from before 1900," said Thagard, 57, president of Fontana Paper Mill. "It mostly hauled sugar cane."
